Fraudulent practice that affects business models based on cost per click (cost per click (CPC). Occurs when, using this system of payment, an attempt is made to cheat the system by generating false clicks on advertising formats to thereby obtain a profit.
These unnatural clicks can be performed manually, in which case they are easily detectable, or performed automatically and on a large scale using botnets capable of simulating spontaneity. It is estimated that almost a third of the traffic generated by advertising on advertising networks originates from botnets. Such a high rate generates substantial losses, and may deplete advertisers' investment spending in vain.
