What is a microblog?

A type of blog that lets users publish short text updates called “microposts”. Microblog contents are updated more frequently than traditional blogs, and their brevity and immediacy enable close and real-time contact to be maintained with other users. Most services provide access from a wide range of platforms such as websites, mobile phones, instant messaging platforms, or custom built applications.

Some of the most successful services are Twitter, Jaiku, Identi.ca or Tumblr.
