What is a stakeholder?

Term used to refer to those persons or groups that are affected by the activities of a particular company or organization, and who can in turn influence it either directly or indirectly. The category of stakeholder typically includes employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, investors, trades unions, strategic partners, public bodies, NGOs, or the media, although increasingly any social group that has some kind of link can be considered to be a stakeholder. The term was coined by R. Edward Freeman in his book Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach, in which he recommends considering them as an essential element in strategic business planning.
