What is SSL or Secure Sockets Layer?

Abbreviation of Secure Socket Layer, which is the name given to the protocol used to establish secure connections via the internet by way of digital certificates. This global standard ensures that the information exchanged between the browser and the web server cannot be read, thereby ensuring that it remains private and secure thanks to data encryption (credit-card numbers, user names, passwords, e-mails, etc.). It is a technology that is widely used by banks, e-commerce, and other services that need to transfer personal information or passwords with high levels of security. It requires the installation of an SSL certificate or ‘digital certificate’ at a web server. The SSL protocol has recently been replaced by transport layer security (TLS).
